Land and Water

she was born of the water
and so,
she is flexible
and blends easily;
comes in when the forces pull
and retreats when they push.

she knows the water,
like her heart;
its waves
gentle and rhythmic,
yet she cannot fathom
the disquiet inside.

perhaps that’s why
she dreams of the hills,
hoping their silence
will still her too,
a shield against
the forces which move her.

her dreams are small –
deep breaths of mountain air
at sunset,
the warmth of metal glasses
full of tea,
sleeping to the gurgles of streams
in the valley below,
the musty smell
of old velvet quilts,
and his body
next to hers.
