Winter Mornings.

He stands near the fence
His back to the apartment building
Looking at the tall trees
The birds flitting from one to the other –
Twitting their merry songs –
And the streaks of morning rays

Sneaking in through thick leaves.

I look at him in the distance
And in front of me, my backyard.
In what is winter, here in Mumbai spring beckons;
Chilly mornings and tentative sunshine
Give way to warm afternoons and pouring sunlight.
The red flowers are starting to bloom
Where once were weeds and stones and cement.
I stare thankfully at the calming sun
As I wrap my shrug around myself
That spring comes early here
And life blooms when no one thought it would.
